AIRDRIE NO.2: WE CAUSED OUR OWN DOWNFALL AGAINST QUEEN'S PARK

Callum Fordyce admits Airdrie were architects of their own downfall by trying to play football in the grit of what was a relegation play-off decider.

Queen’s Park needed to win to be sure of their Championship status, and did so, as goals from Ruari Paton and Liam McLeish gave them a 2-0 victory at Hampden.

That sent Inverness Caledonian Thistle into a play-off semi-final against Montrose next week, despite a 3-1 win over 10-man Morton.

Assistant boss Fordyce reckons there wasn’t much in the game, but the Spiders probably deserved their win.

Airdrie will now turn their attention to their Premiership play-off quarter-final against Partick Thistle on Tuesday and Friday.

Fordyce said: “Fair play to Queen’s Park, they took their two chances well.

“I don’t think there was much created in the game.

“We probably gave the ball away for both their goals, they never really threatened us otherwise.

“I think they had a couple of efforts from long range that Robbie Hemfrey had to kind of deal with, but there weren’t many clear-cut chances in the game, I would say.

“We probably caused our own downfall by trying to play, which will happen sometimes, and you’ve got to take that on the chin.

“But the boys went in, put an effort in, and that’s what we wanted.

“We tried to play football in the right way, the way we want to play, and it wasn’t to be.

“But we’ve got to go towards Tuesday, now.”

Airdrie host Partick Thistle on Tuesday, with the second leg at Firhill on Friday night. Both games are at 7.45pm.
