Defending Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova was in tears after crashing out of Wimbledon following a worrying injury stoppage – and BBC presenter Clare Balding said it was 'really tough to watch.'
Krejcikova was in tears of joy around this time last year when she completed her comeback from injury in some style by winning the most prestigious trophy in tennis.
But triumph turned to despair this time around. Rising star Emma Navarro came from behind for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory, with Krejcikova appearing to battle an unknown health issue during the match.
The third set had to be stopped for Krejcikova to have her blood pressure checked and at one point it appeared she may have to forfeit.
In the end the 29-year-old trooped on and saw out the remaining games, but was clearly distressed with a grimace on her face.
After the match point, she broke down in tears at the back of the court in a heartbreaking moment captured by the TV cameras.
And after victorious American Navarro was interviewed, presenter Balding said: "It's really tough to watch. We hope Barbora Krejcikova will recover soon. She was so brave in that final set to keep going."
Krejcikova received a warm ovation from the Wimbledon crowd and her exit now means there will be a new champion.
World No.8 Iga Swiatek appears the favourite after seeing off Danielle Collins to reach the last 16.
Navarro goes on to face Mirra Andreeva in the next round.
