Modest Rory McIlroy reckons golf has plenty of storylines across the game and isn't just about him as he distributed sparkle to rivals such as Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth.
The Northern Irish superstar is at the centre of the sport’s universe having become just the sixth-ever player to win the career Grand Slam when triumphing at last month’s Masters.
But McIlroy, who is headline act at the Truist Championship in Philadelphia this week, is adamant there’s more going on in the game than just him. The global icon pointed to the work and success of his peers and said: “There’s enough great storylines in golf, whether it be like Scottie won by a million last week and seems to be playing back to his best. You’ve got Jordan Spieth going for the career Grand Slam next week. You’ve got a lot of exciting stuff happening in the women’s game.
“So there’s always great storylines in golf. And you know, it certainly doesn’t just have to be about me.”
McIlroy gave his response having been asked what people will talk about following the ending of his 11-year Major drought in Augusta. On Thursday, he begins his bid at Quail Hollow aiming to win the PGA Championship and smiled: “Hopefully in two weeks time we’re talking about me being a six-time Major champion instead of a five time major champion!”
McIlroy wants to win the Truist for a fourth success on the PGA Tour this term, but admits the event is more about fine-tuning for the upcoming Major as he added: “I don’t want to diminish this tournament and this championship, But with everything that’s happened over the past couple of weeks, this was always going to be a great prep week for me to see where my game was and refine a few things.
“I still want to play well, and I still want to have a chance to win the tournament, but I’ll have a much better gauge of where my game is going into next week after these four days, than I would have had if I hadn’t played or if I had to just spend the week at home practising. So this is an important week for me.”
