REPORT: RALF RANGNICK NOW THE FAVORITE TO REPLACE THOMAS TUCHEL AT BAYERN MUNICH

According to a report by TZ, Bayern Munich have set their sights on Austria coach Ralf Rangnick as their number one candidate to replace Thomas Tuchel when he leaves this summer. The deal could be announced as soon as this week, if all goes according to plan.

Per the report, Rangnick is willing to listen to Bayern’s offer. A meeting has already taken place between him and club representatives, in the form of Max Eberl and Christoph Freund. Rangnick and Freund have a solid relationship from working together during their time at RB Salzburg, and the Austrian may be willing to leave his project with the national team to come coach Bayern Munich.

Importantly, it seems that the former Manchester United boss is no longer the same “control freak” that he used to be. Rangnick has reportedly mellowed out and will no longer demand the same type of control that he is used to getting at clubs he takes over.

Rangnick also has major supporters backing him — Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, for example, is said to be a major proponent of the move. With the Bayern bosses apparently looking to rebuild the squad after this season concludes, Rangnick might be their pick to do the job. He seems more like an “interim” candidate to stabilize the club, so that someone like Julian Nagelsmann or Xabi Alonso can take over somewhere down the line.

Is Bayern making the right move, or is this a sign of desperation from Bayern Munich? You can be sure that fans and pundits will debate this topic for weeks to come, unless Rangnick does what Alonso and Nagelsmann did and deliberately takes himself out of the running.

If that scenario actually happens, we get closer and closer to a scenario where the club begs Thomas Tuchel to stay for another year — no matter how he does in the Champions League this season.
