MARVIN HINTON DIES AGED 85 AS CHELSEA SHARE TOUCHING STATEMENT ON LEGENDARY FA CUP WINNER

Chelsea have announced the death of former defender Marvin Hinton at the age of 85. He made 344 appearances for the club, winning three trophies.

In a touching statement on social media, the club wrote: "It is with tremendous sadness that Chelsea Football Club announces the passing yesterday [Tuesday] of Marvin Hinton. Our thoughts are with Marvin’s family and friends at this difficult time.”

The defender was part of the FA Cup winning squad in 1970, the first time that Chelsea won the trophy.

He was also part of the squad who won the 1965 League Cup and the 1971 Cup Winner's Cup.

Hinton joined Chelsea from Charlton in 1963, having made 14 first team appearances for the Addicks. He spent 13 years with Chelsea, leaving the club in 1976.

He has a short spell with non-league club Barnet before retiring in the same year. The defender was part of Alf Ramsay's provisional England squad for the 1966 World Cup, but didn't make the final cut for the tournament in which England came out victorious.

Following the statement, Chelsea fans were quick to send their own condolences. One wrote: "A true Chelsea legend. Sending strength to his family and everyone at the club. Rest in peace Marvin."

Another said: "RIP Marvin I had the pleasure of watching you play for Chelsea. Thoughts with family and friends at this sad time."

A third wrote: "One of the best Left backs in football history, Rest In Peace Legend." The cause of death has not been confirmed.

Hinton cost a fee of £30,000 when completing a move to Chelsea. Known as 'Super Marv' he visited Chelsea's training centre in 2023 as part of a delayed celebration for his 80th birthday.

Speaking to Chelsea about his style of play, with him able to play across the backline or in the 'sweeper' role, Hinton said: "I would think it is no good just kicking it, I liked to pull it down and shuffle it, pass it, get it back again and then set them off.

"Ronnie [Harris] would do the tackling and I used to pick up the pieces and look and have time. It was a different game altogether from now.

"It was not easy to play on the heavy grounds but we were successful and it was the first time Chelsea had won cups."
