LEWIS WING IS YOUR READING 2023/24 PLAYER OF THE SEASON

Many congratulations to Lewis Wing, your TTE Player of the Season for 2023/24. He’s followed up on winning the club’s official award by, unsurprisingly, taking ours too. Even before the end of the campaign it was clear that Wing was the favoured player for many fans, and that’s been borne out in both awards.

Still, he had some strong competition to fight off. As with the club’s voting, his closest rival for the TTE award was Tyler Bindon, with Harvey Knibbs coming third. Our extra candidate, Sam Smith, came in fourth.

To get our results, we assigned a value to the placing of each vote. For example, if you named Lewis Wing first, we gave him four points, but if you named him fourth, we gave him one point, and so on. Doing all of that gave him a tally of 547, ahead of Bindon (459), Knibbs (422 - ironically similar to a formation he struggled in) and Smith (292).

Here’s how the voting breaks down visually:

And if you want to see the breakdown of the non-weighted voting, there’s a chart for that too:

Wing joins Oliver Norwood, Yann Kermorgant, Modou Barrow, Andy Yiadom, Rafael Cabral, Josh Laurent, John Swift and Tom Ince in winning a TTE POTS award.

It’s a thoroughly deserved win for someone who’s excelled for Reading since joining last summer. Wing brings a huge amount of class to the Royals’ midfield, particularly his passing range, which gives the side another dimension in possession. He also chipped in with a massive 11 goals and 11 assists - quite the return for a deeper-lying midfielder.

What Wing doesn’t get quite so much credit for is his work out of possession though. No lightweight, Wing brings steel to the midfield, which works a treat for the aggressive pressing style Ruben Selles has developed.

Because of that well rounded skill set, we’ve seen him be trusted in various roles this season. Wing’s operated as one of the two deeper midfielders in the 4-2-2-2 and 4-2-3-1, higher up in the 4-1-4-1, and even as a sole holding player in that same formation.

It’s still pretty early days, but Wing looks to be one of Reading’s best midfielders of recent years. Certainly he’s one of our canniest signings in recent years. Hopefully he can keep that up in the seasons to come.

Congrats Lewis!
